In his article for the Washington Post, Dan Lamothe reports on the increasing likelihood of US military advisers being deployed in a ‘long –term [NATO] mission in Libya against IS. Lamothe reports that the leadership structure of the coalition is still unclear, especially following reports of the Italian government’s possible withdrawal of support to the UN mission. According to the Chairman of the US Joint Cheifs of Staff, the Italians are unlikely to back out. However, they have set specific conditions for Italian involvement in Libya:
They include the unity government requesting Italian intervention and identifying who should be trained, and there being demonstrated international support, possibly through a U.N. Security Council mandate….
As the Security Council examines the GNA’s request to lift the arms embargo, the UN is also requesting clarity of the Libyan unity government, especially regarding who will receive the weapons in question.To read the rest of the article please click here.
