On 25 February, Al Jazeera published an article by Simon Speakman Cordall, titled ‘Under new general, Russia’s Wagner makes deeper inroads into Libya’. Cordall examines Russia’s expanding presence in Africa, with a special focus on the Wagner group in Libya. Looking at Russian contractors deployed in Libya, as well as existing air bases and possible docking rights in exchange for technical support for the Libyan National Army (LNA), he argues that Russia’s reach in the country is on the rise. Cordall concludes, however, that ‘there are no guarantees that Moscow’s alliance with [LNA commander Khalifa] Haftar may not also fall victim to the cold pragmatism that has been constant amid the chaos in Libya since its revolution’.
