On 10, lawyer and political activist Hanan Al-Barassi was assassinated in Benghazi, national and international media report. Al-Barassi was a well known female activist, vocal on social media against human rights violations and abuses and corruption allegedly committed by authorities in Eastern Libya and their affiliated militias. The fact that Al-Barassi was assassinated in broad daylight in Benghazi city center by a group of unknown armed men reflects the issue of impunity regarding violence against activists in Libya, and most particularly in Eastern Libya. On 11 November, a joint statement was issued on the Lawyers for Justice in Libya platform by several civil society and human rights Libyan and regional associations to denounce this new attack and the governmental failure to address violence against activists.Click here to read the media reports.
