On 16 April, Tim Eaton published with Chatham House a very interesting and well-articulated article investigating the economic model supporting General Haftar’s Libyan National army (LNA). His demonstration suggests that the financial matter could be decisive in the fight for Tripoli between the LNA and forces aligned with the Government of National Army (GNA). For Eaton, persisting fighting between could cause significant damages to the economy of Eastern Libya and undermine the funding model of LNA operations. Eaton highlights how securing the necessary financial resources for LNA operations has been key to Haftar’s military successes in Libya, as Eastern Libya has limited access to resources, compared to Western Libyan armed forces due to the presence of Libya’s main financial institution in Tripoli.
