Elections Likely to Rise Tensions

On 16 September, Managing Director of Libya Analysis Rhiannon Smith was quoted in an article writen by Célian Macé for Liberation about the organisation of elections in Libya. In the article, Macé argues that the French government continues to hold on to its plan to organize elections in Libya by the end of 2018, despite the continuing deterioration of the political and security environment in the country. Over the past weeks, central figures in the Libyan crisis such as the Head of the Government of National Accord (GNA) have stated that it might be impossible to hold elections in Libya by the end of 2018. Smith was quoted saying that the outcome of elections could be manipulated by militia groups through the control of Libya's strategic institutions. As such, maitaining the deadline for the elections is likely to rise significant tensions in the country.Click here to read the article.
