French and international media outlets reported on 16 October that former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was put under formal investigation by French authorities for charges relating to campaign funding mismanagement. Prosecutors will be investigating long-standing allegations that former Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi secretly funded Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential campaign.
