On 5 September, Stratfor published an article on the persisting rivalry between France and Italy in Libya and the impact of the division between the two powers on Libyan affairs. The author argues that France and Italy have conflicting views on what solutions should be implemented in Libya due to the different goals they pursue in Libya. This argument is supported by maps representing the interests of the two powers. On the one hand, a map illustrates France’s intention to reassert its international role and contain insecurity in North Africa and neighbor countries. On the other hand, another map shows Italy’s attempt to protect its economic interests in Libya and contain migrant routes. According to the author, the division between France and Italy is likely to continue constituting an obstacle to the formulation of an international approach to Libya.Click here to read the article.
