Guterres calls for elections during African Union speech

On 17 February, the UN reported on Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' speech given at the High-level Committee on Libya at the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Guterres emphasises the urgent need to 'break the protracted political stalemate' in Libya through holding elections to advance gains in security, national reconciliation, and human rights. Guterres stated that the UN is committed to Libyan-owned and Libyan-led solutions, and said the UN is committed to overcoming past communication misunderstandings between the UN and Libya. Guterres emphasised that there is 'no alternative to elections', and advocated for the withdrawal of foreign fighters and the continuation of the security track to help facilitate a peaceful transition. He advocated for the UN and AU to work together with other regional actors to support Libya's people and move towards 'a more peaceful and prosperous future'.
