Interventions by foreign powers involved in the Libyan crisis at the UN General Assembly revealed their conflicting positions regarding the Libyan crisis, John Irish reports for Reuters on 24 September. At the session of the General Assembly on 24 September, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi indirectly reiterated Egypt’s support to General Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA) as well as for the attempt by the LNA to take control of Tripoli. This intervention was then followed by a speech by Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani denouncing alleged violations by Haftar and his armed forces and the support provided by foreign powers to Haftar. As efforts are underway by Germany to provided Libyan factions with a mediation platform to address their issues, these discussions at the UN General Assembly highlight the difficulties faced by the international community to unify its voice and lead a concerted action.Click here to read the article.
