On 6 August, Al-Monitor's Fehim Tastekin published an analysis of the growing rapprochement between Turkey and Malta with regards to Libya. The article argues that recent meetings between Turkish, Maltese and GNA officials indicate Malta's quest for an ally in stemming migration to the EU, while Turkey is pursuing a much more ambitious strategy of using a relationship with Malta to ultimately try and capture Sirte and other eastern provinces. As major EU states align against it, Turkey needs an ally, but Tastekin is doubtful that 'tipping the balance' in Libya is worth the risk for Malta.Click here to read the article.
