On 3 June, Le Monde published a report by Nissim Gasteli titled ‘Benghazi, Libya's new hub for illegal immigration to the US’. The report follows chartered flights from Benghazi in eastern Libya, including from Benina International Airport, carrying ‘undocumented migrants’ en route to the US via South America. According to the report, the flights land in the Nicaraguan capital Managua, which has become ‘a major transit point for would-be immigrants to the US’. Gasteli speaks to a migration expert, who explains that Nicaragua has opened its borders to nationals of ‘politically difficult countries’, including Libya, allowing them to come without a visa in return for payment on arrival.
