Reuters reported that on 6 April, Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA) fighters began military operations to take control of the Tamehint airbase, which is located north-east of Sebha, from the Government of National Accord (GNA) aligned Misratan Third Force who currently control it. The LNA and the Third Force have been wrestling for control of the strategic airbase for several months. The Third Force is also believed to be preparing to retake Brak al-Shati airport after it relinquished control of the airport to Mohamed Bin Nayel's LNA fighters a few weeks ago.
"The General Command announced today the launch of military ground operations to liberate Tamanhent base ... with the participation of the air force," said LNA spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari.The leadership of a U.N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in the capital, Tripoli, condemned the move and said it had ordered its forces to help repel the attack. "We strongly warn against this continuing and unjustified escalation and tampering with the security and stability of the homeland, which opens the door to a civil war," it said in a statement.
