Reuters reports on ‘migrant expulsions’ from Tunisia to Libya

On 11 June, Reuters published an exclusive report by David Lewis titled ‘Migrant expulsions from Tunisia to Libya fuel extortion, abuse, UN says’. The report cites a confidential UN human rights briefing, which found that Tunisian border guards had ‘rounded up migrants and passed them to counterparts in Libya where they have faced forced labour, extortion, torture and killing’. The briefing is based on interviews with 18 former detainees, as well as photographic and video evidence of torture in one of the facilities. This comes as the two countries work closely with the EU to stop migrant arrivals from North Africa into southern Europe via the Mediterranean.
