On 12 July, Rhiannon Smith, Managing Director of Libya-Analysis, appeared on Voice of America's Africa News Tonight segment where she discussed the recent declaration by Fathi Bashaagha, leader of the Government of National Stability (GNS), that he plans to take office in Tripoli in the coming days. Rhiannon said we could see a move by Bashaagha to enter Tripoli this week as tensions and his government's desperation are high. While Rhiannon said it is unlikely that he will succeed in forcing the Government of National Unity (GNU) Prime Minister, Abdul Hameed Dabaiba, out of office, she predicted escalating tensions and violence in coming days. When asked about the role of the international community in these tensions, Rhiannon emphasised that the UN process has failed and the international community does not seem to have a backup plan. She said their support of the House of Representatives (HoR) and High State Council (HSC) has been part of the problem, as neither of these bodies want to have elections as they will lose their power. Rhiannon concluded that there is no obvious way forward at present.
