On 8 April, France 24 reported that Russia demanded on 7 April that the UN Security Council statement on Libya should be reformulated. According to reports, the statement initially called on forces affiliated with Eastern Libyan General Haftar to halt their advance on the Libyan capital. On Russia’s demand, the statement was rewritten to be addressed to all Libyan factors to halt fighting. This reveals the dissension within international ranks regarding political actors in Libya. While supporting officially the UN-led initiatives for political reconciliation in Libya, Russia has also been providing support to General Haftar and his affiliated forces. For many analysts, the current situation is a direct result of the ambiguous policies of international actors towards Libya, driven by competing interests.Click here to read the report.
