On 29 October, The New Arab published a report by Amy Addison-Dunne and Marwa Koçak titled ‘Uncovering the ugly truth of Italy’s migrant pushback tactics’. The report looks at Italy’s efforts to combat trafficking and illegal migration, for which the country and the EU have invested millions in the Libyan coastguard. The authors cite MSF and UN reports about migrants being pushed back and facing violence and torture upon their return to Libya, with the Libyan coastguard threatening civil rescue fleets with ‘dangerous manoeuvres, boarding their ships and trying to prevent rescues’.
