In November, The Small Arms Survey published a briefing paper by Dr Buğra Süsler titled ‘Turkish foreign policy in Libya: Geopolitical Interests and Fragile Peace’. The paper examines Turkey’s strategy and role in Libya amid political uncertainty and the risk of violent escalation, contributing to the broader understanding of the political stalemate in the country. It focuses on three key drivers behind Turkey’s engagement with Libya: economic, as in re-securing previous deals between Turkish businesses and the government of Libya; geopolitical—as a counterbalance to the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum, among others; and the ruling government’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) policy preferences in the wider region.
