On 19 June, African Arguments published an article entitled ‘Libya, Washington and Khartoum’ by Egyptian journalist Khaled Mahmoud, who attributes Washington’s recently renewed interest in Libya to its desire to ‘curb Moscow’s growing influence both among Libya’s warring factions, and in the wider region’, including Sudan. He further argues that the CIA director’s 24-hour visit to Libya in January indicates ‘the necessity – rather than the desire – to re-engage’ with Libya. Meanwhile, Mahmoud concludes, UN Special Envoy Abdoulaye Bathily’s approach to resolve the political crisis ‘lacks imagination and reveals the international community’s lack of an effective strategy’.
