On 22 June, Al Jazeera published an article titled ‘Libya 6+6 deal: Loopholes cast doubt on democratic elections’, shedding light on the unresolved contentious issues that continue to block the democratic process, namely the eligibility criteria for presidential candidates, second-round voting, and the requirement to form a new government ahead of elections. Speaking to observers and experts on Libya, the article concludes that the legal framework alone would not be sufficient to hold successful elections, but that it would also require ‘a political agreement that ensures buy-in and inclusion of all major stakeholder’.
