On 5 November, Bloomberg published a report titled ‘Putin’s Move to Secure Libya Bases Is New Regional Worry for US’. Citing anonymous sources, the report claims that several air bases controlled by Wagner paramilitaries are set to be ‘upgraded to host Russian forces’, adding that on the longer term, Russian warships could also ‘get permanent docking rights at a Libyan port, most likely Tobruk’. It further explains how LNA commander Khalifa Haftar’s ‘deepening ties with Moscow’ have raised new concerns for the US, which has sent several high-level officials to Libya earlier this year to try and persuade him to change his course.
