In his latest article for Middle East Monitor 19 November, Mustafa Fetouri reviews the efforts undertaken by Egypt on the matter of the unification of military forces in Libya. While all factions agree on the importance of the unification of the existing armed forces in Libya, there has been no conclusive agreement yet. A central issue remains the organisation of the chain of command, with Eastern-based institutions and factions demanding the integration of General Haftar in the chain of command of the Libyan forces. However, this idea has been met with strong opposition in Western Libya. On 19 November, the Head of the High Council of State (HCS) Khalid Al-Mishri declared his support to the Head of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Sarraj on rejecting the appointment of General Haftar as the supreme commander of Libya’s future army.Click here to read the article.
