On 19 April, Defense News published a report by Tom Kington, titled ‘Russia funneling weapons through Libyan port, eying gateway to Africa’. Kington looks at recent reports of Russian arms shipments arriving at Tubruq port this month, unloading ‘thousands of tons of military equipment’, including towed artillery, armored personnel carriers and rocket launchers. He argues that while the weapons and equipment could be Russia’s way to sustain its growing military presence in eastern Libya, they could also be an attempt to counter renewed US interest in Libya, as well as Moscow’s gateway to grow its presence across Africa.
