On 24 August, Deutsche Welle released a documentary film about the ‘comeback’ of Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi, the second son of late Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi, who was killed in the aftermath of the Libyan revolution in 2011. Today, Said Al Islam returns to the Libyan political scene, vying for power as an unlikely presidential candidate. The film describes Saif Al Islam’s presidential bid as a ‘major challenge for Libya’, given that he has been convicted several times in Libya and is currently being prosecuted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity. The film uses statements from relatives and political actors, attempting to paint a portrait of the ‘unpredictable and fiercely determined survivor who is trying to find his way’.
