On 16 August, New Lines Magazine published an article by Wolfram Lacher, titled ‘Libya’s Struggles Empower a Clan’. Lacher looks at the recent developments and power struggles in Libya, arguing that the collusion of key figures - once considered enemies - has ‘opened up unprecedented access to funds for the east-based Haftar family, threatening a fragile equilibrium’. According to Lacher, the Haftar clan has exploited the struggle between CBL governor al-Siddiq al-Kabir and Prime Minister Abdul Hameed Dabaiba, which has helped the eastern commander’s family to ‘unparalleled funds to dispense patronage’. This has resulted in a worsening ‘hemorrhage’ of state funds, he argues, with Haftar’s sons consolidating their power, threatening the ‘shaky balance that has maintained the calm in Libya over the past decade’.
