On 4 June, French researcher and specialist of the Middle East François Burgat published an article with Middle East Eye in which he denounces the support of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and France to General Haftar. For Burgat, Libya’s internal divisions are fuelled by external actors pursuing their onw national interests. Burget argues that in the Libyan case, under the pretense of the fight against terrorism, France follows the lead of the UAE and its allied Arab states hoping that it will benefit its weapon industry. Other analysts responded to Burgat’s analysis saying that it had to be nuanced, that France’s ideology came also has a factor explaining its positioning in Libya, with the choice to focus on a strong figure to contain instability and insecurity in a strategic geographical zone.Click here to read the article.
