Is the United States the way forward for Libya?

On 1 June, Hafed Al-Ghwell and Karim Mezran published with The Hill an op-ed in which they plead for the United States to intervene in Libya to put an end to the conflict and stop General Haftar’s advance on Tripoli. For Al-Ghwell and Mezran, the support of the United States to the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the UN efforts in Libya is vital and Washington should manifest it clearly. Mezran and Al-Ghwell move on to drawing several recommendations for actions to undertake. First they recommend for NATO under U.S leadership to declare a no fly zone over the Libyan territory to undermine external support to factions and protect lives. Following, they propose the re-establishment of a status quo between the two warring factions and the revitalization of the UN-led negotiation process. Lastly, they argue in favour of developing an effort towards supporting the emergence of a new leadership in Eastern Libya, instead of General Haftar and supporting the implementation of the UN embargo prohibiting arms to Libya. This call for a greater engagement of the United States on the Libyan matters echoes many other voices that have been petitioning over the past few months for the U.S to revise its Libya policy.Click here to read the article.
