On 11 December, media outlets including Al Jazeera, Le Monde, and Der Spiegel published a collaborative investigative report on European authorities helping Libyan militias illegally push back migrants to Libya. The report found that the Libyan National Army’s (LNA) Wagner-linked Tareq Bin Zayed (TBZ) brigade, led by Saddam Haftar (the son of LNA commander Khalifa Haftar), uses coordinates released by Europe’s border agency Frontex to pull back hundreds of migrants at a time from European waters to eastern Libya. The investigation also found confidential reports showing that ‘EU states are aware of the illicit nature of many of TBZ’s activities – including human trafficking’.
