In November, The Sentry published a report titled ‘Libya’s Kleptocratic Boom’. In its report, the investigative and policy organization warns of a growing ‘kleptocratic sector’ in Libya, arguing that the country’s current leaders and political elite are responsible for corruption and organized crime that threaten essential state institutions, including its lifeline oil sector. The report also criticises the international focus on de-escalation and conflict mediation, cautioning that ‘unless bolder international policies are adopted, a relapse into armed conflict is a distinct possibility’.
