Media outlets reported that on 22 June, the head of the UN Special Mission to Libya (UNSMIL) Ghassan Salamé met with General Haftar in Eastern Libya. The meeting occurs as Tripoli enters in its third month of fighting between Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) and forces aligned with the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA). Since the eruption of fighting in April, neither side has been able to make significant progress in Tripoli. As the situation stalls the meeting appears as an attempt by UNSMIL to relaunch the political dialogue in Libya. However, it remains unlikely that Haftar will be willing to engage in negotiations.
