In a guest opinion piece in Newsweek, Bill Drexel, former crew member aboard the luventa search and rescue ship off the coast of Libya, condemns Italian officials for their campaign against humanitarian efforts to protect migrants along the Central Mediterranean Route. Drexel claims that Rome, not the humanitarian organisations trying to fill the gap left after the Italian Navy halted all rescue operations, violated international and domestic law by bankrolling Libya's coastguard.
