On 1 May, The New Arab published an analysis article entitled ‘Haftar and Hemedti: Two sides of the same coin’ by political analyst Ufuk Necat Tasci, who argues that Libya’s influence could be critical in the Sudanese conflict due to the close ties between the commander of the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), and his alleged Libyan supporter, Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar. Tasci examines the links between the two generals and speaks to analysts who argue that the relationship has less to do with Haftar and Hemedti specifically and is more about the UAE. One of the analysts concludes saying that the Sudanese conflict will directly affect Libya, ‘which is awash with weapons and foreign fighters that have refused to leave despite a UN ceasefire deal that called for their exit in 2020’.
