On 21 August, Katherine Pollock and Frederic Wehrey published an article with Canergie Endowment For International Peace on the situation at the Tunisian-Libyan border. In their article, the authors highlight the discrepancy between the policies implemented in the area and the aspirations of the communities located near the border. Pollock and Wehrey argue that while policies mostly focus on enhancing security in the border area, a lasting solution would require a broader approach focusing on the development of economic opportunities for the local communities. The situation at the Tunisian-Libyan border appears to stand as a mirror of Libya’s malaise. Indeed, the approaches designed for the stabilization of the country mostly focus on security and political aspects. However, the stabilization of Libya would require a broader approach with a focus on economic issues, as argued by Libya-Analysis Managing Director Rhiannon Smith and Founder Jason Pack in their latest essay published by Brooking Lawfare’s blog on 19 August.
