On 22 October, Hamza Meddeb published with Carnegie Middle East Center an analysis of Russia’s strategy in the Arab world, identifying its approach as ‘opportunistic’. Meddeb argues that over the past year, Russia has progressively increased its influence in the Middle East by exploiting the mistakes made by other foreign powers. According to the author, in the Libyan context, Russia is establishing itself as a key interlocuteur for Libyan parties, taking advantage of the failure by Western powers such a France or Italy to push forward a lasting solution to Libya’s crisis. He analyses that Russia’s involvement in Libya serves Russia’s ambitions in the Middle East and the Mediterranean and contributes to reasserting Russia’s international role.Click here to read more.
