The Case for Optimism in Libya

On 30 November, Frederic Wehrey and Jalel Harchaoui published with Foreign Affairs an article entitled « Is Libya Finally Ready for Peace » in which they analyse a trend of positive developments in Libya over the past months. Wehrey and Harchaoui argue :

Recent developments include progress reining in Tripoli’s militias, economic reforms by the GNA, and a weakening of Haftar’s national position. Taken together, these developments offer, for the first time in years, reason for guarded optimism about Libya’s future. The international community must capitalize on this momentum while mitigating a number of looming risks.

Among those risks, Wehrey and Harchaoui count militia tensions in Tripoli and the risk of widepsread violence resuming in Libya, as well as interference from international powers seeking through their involvement in the Libyan crisis.Click here to read the article.
