In a letter obtained by CNN and written to head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Bob Corker, Tillerson said he would end or transfer as many as three dozen special envoy positions including Libya, South Sudan, and Syria. This is the first substantial move related to the NEA bureau connected to the rumored reorganization of the State Department under Secretary of State Tillerson. Hundreds of positions in the Department remain empty months after the Trump administration entered the White House. The decision to end the position of US Special Envoy to Libya speaks to the fact that the administration is hesitant to engage in Libya via the standard channels. It is unlikely that we will see a drastic change in policy any time soon.
