Understanding the consequences of the tensions in the Oil Crescent

On 17 July, Jason Pack, the founder of Libya Analysis, discussed with Voice of America in a phone interview the tensions in the Oil Crescent and their impacts on Libya's economy and political process. For Pack, Haftar did not really intend to export oil through the Eastern-based National Oil Corporation (NOC) but used the control of oil facilities as a bargaining chip to obtain political leverage. Pack argues that the resolution of the crisis was most likely facilitated by the intervention of foreign powers. However, it remains unclear what Haftar has obtained in exchange for handing over the control of the infrastructure, Pack states.Click here to hear the interview (8'10).
