Middle East Institute: ‘In Libya, UN failure and Russian influence require updated US policy’

On 25 April, the Middle East Institute published an article by Jonathan M. Winer, titled ‘In Libya, UN failure and Russian influence require updated US policy’. Winer examines the obstacles faced by UNSMIL and outgoing UN Envoy Aabdoulaye Bathily, as well as Russia’s growing influence and support for Libya’s eastern powers, all amid a ‘sporadic and inadequate’ US engagement. He criticizes the Trump administration’s ‘malign neglect’ of Libya, arguing that ‘to have any chance of success, US intensified engagement must begin to reshape an environment that has become all too comfortable for’ Libya’s actors, ‘as well as the foreign governments who have promoted them’.
