The Challenge of Primary Health Care in Libya

In an article for Brookings published on 10 December, authors Ernest Massiah, Moustafa Abdalla, Kent Garber provide a review of the Libyan health system, showing its deficiencies. According to the authors, Libya’s primary health care faces numerous, important challenges such as the difficult recruitment of new workers, the militarization of health facilities and humanitarian aid, chronic drug and equipment shortages, and a persistent lack of infrastructure. Studies also reveal that Libya is faced with the recurrence of diseases such a malaria, polio and drug-resistant tuberculosis. Drawing on this analysis, the authors also discuss ways to mend the gaps in Libya’s health system, such as improving documentation on health needs and practices in Libya and turning towards the private sector.Click here to read the article.
